What can you do about grey hair? Comparing your options

Keeping grey hair, temporary coverage, colouring and gradual cosmetic care can meet different preferences.

Name the result you want

Wanting to change grey hair can mean covering roots for one event, reducing contrast gradually or choosing an entirely different shade. These aims deserve different comparisons. Ask how pronounced a change you want, how quickly you need it and what maintenance you can manage.

There is no requirement to change your colour at all. A comfortable routine and a haircut you enjoy are complete choices, not a temporary failure to find the right product.

Keeping grey hair visible

If you are growing out colour, the boundary between regrowth and lengths may be the main practical difficulty. A hairdresser can discuss a cut and a transition plan without assuming you must immediately replace one colouring system with another.

Separate pigment from condition. If the ends feel rough, everyday care or a haircut may matter more than a new shade.

Temporary coverage and colouring

Root sprays, powders and other temporary products can meet a short-term need. Coverage, feel, transfer and removal depend on the formula. Read instructions instead of assuming every product behaves the same way.

Dyes and toners can suit a more sustained change, but differ in coverage and maintenance. New growth remains part of the plan. Compare them using our colouring guide, especially if a clear boundary at the roots would bother you.

Gradual cosmetic application

Reparex suits a person prepared to follow a repeated application routine rather than one colouring session. That rhythm may be an advantage or an inconvenience depending on your preferences; it is not proof of a guaranteed result.

Check previous colouring first. Instructions specify undyed hair, a three-month interval after colouring and restrictions involving copper derivatives. Do not assume an interval removes old colour from the lengths. See Reparex and hair dye before changing systems.

Compare the work behind the photograph

Consider time, protecting the bathroom, application tools, maintenance and who to contact if the result differs from your expectation. Avoid buying several incompatible approaches at once. Cosmetic colour adjustment does not stop future unpigmented growth or replace assessment of a health concern. The best next step is the one you understand and can realistically maintain.
